Domesday Book is a detailed survey and valuation of landed property in England at the end of the 11th century. The survey was ordered by William the Conqueror at Christmas 1085 and undertaken the following year. It records who held the land and how it was used, and also includes information on how this had changed since the Norman Conquest in 1066. It is not a census of the population, and the individuals named in it are almost exclusively land-holders. Domesday is written in Latin.

Open Domesday is a free online version of the Domesday Book, the great survey of English landholdings commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085–86. The website allows users to search for places recorded in Domesday, explore them on an interactive map, view details of landholders and settlements, and examine images of the original manuscript folios. It is an excellent resource for family and local historians investigating the origins and medieval history of English communities.

The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy (FMG) was established in 2001 to promote the study of genealogy and prosopography for the period before 1500 AD, and to publish the results of those studies. Although we are based in the UK our membership and genealogical interests are world-wide.
